He therefore had to endure over an hour of Professor Trelawney, who spent half the lesson telling everyone that the position of Mars with relation to Saturn at that moment meant that people born in July were in great danger of sudden, violent deaths.

What could be on the agenda today? Good news: I'm recovering from my HP coma (well whether it's good is up for intepretation) but now I do believe I've landed into an icon coma. With that said, it's debatable if I'm actually freed from the wrath of my mind's HP frenzies. Yes, all the icons happen to be HP-themed. Speaking of which I am premiering a new icon today. Once this entry's done, I will also bid goodbye to this tom riddle/ginny layout. On that note, it feels like this is one of the longest layouts I've had up and incidentally I feel it's one of my better ones much unlike my carne a llanera theme. I hope to this day no vegetarian stopped by. They're my buddies, truly.
Don't you rejoice when you learn an novel word fresh off the dictionary and it immediately debuts in whatever you're reading for the first time? So here's to the word ennui. It first came up in the novel I read last week called Native Speaker. Might I add that were it not for the obligatory summer reading from L'ville, I would not have read it. Suffice it to say that it is much more a literary work I would learn to appreciate when I'm 30. Two things I did like was how it related the protagonist to language and identity. Living in the States always presents the struggle of maintaining your bilingualism at a decent level. I mean, lookit, am I not writing in English at this present moment just so the regular people that read my lj can understand it? It's that perpetual fear of becoming monolingual that resides in us reminding us we are always INSERT NATIONALITY-American. We are born bilingual and one of our largest disillusions is that one language will overcome the other entirely. One of the best ways to be tied to our culture is through language and if that knowledge abandons our minds, we are in a sense isolated from our own selves. Along with detaching a part of yourself, you also are deprived of the previous pride you held for being a master of linguistics. From the time we are labeled toddlers, our voices deftly imitate the native speakers of all the nationalities we share. We're the new generation seeping with blendings of culture and language. This brings me to my next point over Native Speaker: identity. It hit close to home when the protagonist metioned his mother had not intended on her son to be born in America. It was a mere accident of nationality that bequeathed to the protagonist a radically diverse lifestyle consisting of balancing his Korean side and American side while simultaneously realizing that if he were stripped of one of those nationalities, he would not be able to resume such a masquerade. You are both a foreigner and a native to the very lands you belong to. Such are the consequences of being an immigrant's child. On a sidenote, they killed the Dominican! WTF, mate. Sure, just do away with the only genius Hispanic in the story.
Ennui also made an apperance in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There were constantly these tinges of humour whenever they dealt with God and abstract ideas. Also read the DaVinci Legacy. First published in the early 80s, this novel was modified to include global changes such as the Euro currency conversion and 9/11. Judging by the plot summary on the back cover, I figured this was the guy Dan Brown ripped off his ideas from. Alas, it was nothing of the sort. The DaVinci Legacy was packed with action and the codex was more of a subplot than anything. So you know, if you feel like visiualising shoot-outs through words instead of watching another armagaedon-style movie, I recommend it.
Oh yes, while we're on the subject of language: I tell you people, you will feel much better when you help out someone who is trying to learn the language(s) you're fluent in. I'm helping [info]x0babyqurl0x  from the [info]_spanglish_ community and now that I think about, I do have two other lj buddies on my flist so I can correct them. I'm a dork that way but I'm offering myself here: If you want some help or practice with Spanish or English, I am here. I'm also willing to give away music! Those 3000 songs in my iTunes have to spread themselves out to others. Thank you [info]syst3m0fagirl  for recommending Detonautas! They rock just as much as Caramelos de Cianuro. Now that we're on music: I can not believe Daddy Yankee's tour took him all the way to Buckingham Palace! The incredulity of reggaeton reaching London is not something I can come to terms with. Even the austere guards by the gates were dancing even if you can never get a smile out of them. JLo and Marc Anthony are now in Bogotá. They are made for each other if they've stuck this long together. You should have seen all the luggage they were carrying and my mum complains about all the stuff she packs for me.
My mum accompanied me to Mass yesterday. This time she offered up the dollar to donate. The sermon was pleasant. It discussed about miracles occurring where faith existed and how all miracles follow a four step pattern. Humans are part of the miracle, it's not just something God does by himself. Well afterwards, my mum went to the grocer's for a few things and when she handed in a 20 dollar bill, the clerk mistook it for a 50 (shows how attentive they are) and gave back my mother extra money. See, God was pleased with my mum coming to church and no matter how skint (broke in British) you are, if you give a little, you get a little more back. This week's lesson: go to church and you win some money.
I was eating some patacones just now and an ant scurries on by me. I ask you this: Do you know anything about the digestive system of an ant? I picked up the ant and I'm pretty sure it just pooped on my thumb.

And hey do you think I could possibly forget it?

And a very happy 40th b-day to JKR. What a prat Terry Pratchett had to be to not only insult her but do it on her birthday as well:

well, I've been so incredibly busy that I haven't had time to read your lj, but I've just read the last three entries. And, because of my lack of time, I'm going to crap my comments to all of them into one jumbled and monster comment. w00t.

Not to inject pity or anything, but I am really sorry about your grandma. I can't really understand but I'm sure it's difficult for all your family, and you especially, so I hope you get the support you need and can get through it all right. *hugs*

I really liked that interview with JKR you posted. I've always been afraid to read those things, but that one was nice. I have a bit more respect for her now. It was funny when she mentioned fanfic. I always wonder if she's out there on the net, sneaking around to get ideas and criticising fanfic and stuff. All the silly little authors going "I have to make this good because maybe this'll be the one she reads"

and when she said Harry-Snape and Harry-Voldemort right after that one interviewer said "shippers" I immediately thought "OMG JKR wants to pair harry with the evildoers! NOOOOO!!!" and then I got a reality check.

I thought your comments on bilingualism in the USA were very interesting. It's too bad I can't really talk about it though, not having experienced any of it. But, being the daughter of a brilliant sociologist, it is something I think about a lot, and I love the amount of insight you put into everything. That's very rare for a teenager. Props to you.

Tis ok. Of course you have been busy being all punky in honour of the wedding among other things I imagine. Monster comments are more than welcome. I love feedback on my own thoughts.

I won't consider it pity at all. I'm more than happy when people express their concern in a non-pathetic lamenting fashion. I just don't want people to actually think that I write about it simply to hear people sympathize. I'm sure that I've gotten the point through by now that I write all of this simply because it's my method of therapy.

Goodie, there is more of the interview to come yet. I haven't read too many transcripts but this one has a satisfying amount of info embedded in it to uncover more mysteries hidden in HP. It took her a while to find out there were websites devoted to H/Hr alone, I wonder what she thought of the fanfiction. There's that time she actually went into a mugglenet chatroom and they rejected all her theories and she signed in on as a spongebob character. She could be among us and here we remain oblivious.

Whew, I interpreted that part as shipping as well. Highly disturbing for a second until I realized she was discussing vengeance. How about the Tom/Harry ship, eh?

Why thank you. This is one of my better posts and I didn't have to think about it much. I live through this everyday and so it's like I'm spilling my soul into my lj whenever I speak of it. It's handy you have a sociological mother, you can appreciate these things more without partaking in it. In turn, I appreciate you more for it. Once I read what I wrote it hits me that I'm a rare teenager. Do you ever see a kid writing stuff like this during vacation on their blog? I'm at least 20 years old at heart.

Tom/Harry, herm, interesting... I'd like to see a good darkfic on that.

I love the conspiracy theories that she's here among us, all the time even though we never know who. It's much more amusing that way.

I know what you mean. I've always gotten on better with some grown-ups (when they take me seriously) than I have with kids my own age. Its so amusing to see the faces of a 20-something when you bring up a current issue and sound more intelligent than them, or have a valid opinion on it. Like they think we're all idiots or something.

It's a real shame we abandoned those religion and politics and philosophy debates. They were so awesome. Maybe once school begins and my brain is a tad more focused we can resume them. What do you say?

Tom/Harry is so tempting. Of course the good fic writer must determine whether there will be a redeemed!Tom or a dark!Harry. There has to be some compromise. I need to read a Tom/Harry fic.

Something else we can relate to! I have never comprehended the mentality or the actions of this miserable generation enough to get along with my own age group. I've been raised with adults and I can only think in advanced thought reflecting on whatever life brings along. I sure beat those 20yr olds. Another victory for me for owning a useful mind. Thanks for the compliment.

Don't call those debates abandoned. They're merely postponed. I say they will be back on once school starts at the latest.

Hey, if you find that good Tom/Harry fic, tellmetellmetellme!

Yay! If you forget, I'll get back to them once the coldplay concert is over, since I'll prolly still have back-to-school jitters before that.

I'll be sure to inform you on T/H fics. If you happen to find one do tell me as well.

Back to school season is a good time to start them up, sure. Have fun at your concert!

Well, here I am struggling for something to comment on since Nina seems to have covered everything pretty well, so I'll just start with "ennui is french, na-na-na na-na-na *sticks out tongue*" I learned that a while ago, in middle school actually, I like it but I so rarely remember it to use it. You said "WTF mate, I take it you've seen "ze end of ze world" on funnyjunk.com then? Quite the great short video. AGH! The band is going by, I'm so glad I quit, that Mr. Stambaugh is a big headed menace, what a jerk, they were supposed to be done half an hour ago, he probably forced them to stay late... I have a few mean words to give him but I won't sink that low. Anywho, I really ought to get on to other comments and whatnot, farewell.

Yeah you got in on my secret. I did watch the End of the world. I've known about it since more or less last november. But that was because my housemate's english teacher played it in class through albinoblacksheep.com. I love that video. Hope you enjoyed my entry then.

I've never not enjoyed an entry, you ought to know that by now, and I most likely never will unless its something like "..." and then its over, that'd be pretty dull and I'd have to comment on how it isn't worthy of a comment, but thats alright, I don't mind throwing comments around like that.

Well, my thoughts echo Nina's otherwise I would have posted my disagreements, I didn't feel the need to waste words on repetition, repetition is so full of ennui after all :D Yessss, I remembered to use it, woot woot!
